Whangarei-Kaipara Operational Support
Whangarei Volunteer Fire Brigade was formed in 1902, after a series of large fires in the central business district.
The Whangarei-Kaipara Operational Support Unit was formed in 2011, when they changed from being the Whangarei Volunteer Fire Brigade, ceasing the firefighting part of their roles. Their base is at the Whangarei Fire Station, alongside two career crews.
The work they can perform includes incident lighting, dealing with flooding and storm damage, salvage, logistical support, traffic management, crowd control, evacuation, first aid, and refreshment provision, across Northland.
Since inception the unit has responded to Kaitaia, Matauri Bay, Moerewa, Whangarei, Ruakaka, Maungaturoto, Paparoa, Matakohe and Ruawai. Types of incidents have included flooding, house and commercial building fires, vehicle crashes, a gas leak, storms and vegetation fires.
